Overview

Jamini Roy was a celebrated and revolutionary artist from 19th century and one of the earliest and most significant artist of Indian Fine art. Considered as the father of modern Indian art, Jamini Roy is known for unique and complex works combining traditional Indian and Western art styles. With bold sweeping fluid calligraphic strokes he created iconic folk style paintings of flat forms, bold colors and crisp outlines.

His painting subjects ranged from Krishna Leela, Ramayana, Santhal tribal, Jesus Christ to birds and Beasts, everyday village life. The painter apparently also had an affinity to the mother and child relationship, and his works frequently depicted a mother caring for her child.
