Overview

Madhubani paintings, which dates back to 2500 years and originated in the Mithila region of Bihar border of Indian and Nepal, is the most internationally acclaimed Indian Folk Art. Origin of Madhubani can be traced back to the Ramayana era. Mythologically in epic Ramayana, king of Mithila, Raja Janak, during his daughter Sita's marriage with Lord Ram, instructed women artists to decorate royal courtyard with magnificent Madhubani paintings.

Over centuries the women of Mithila, kept the art form alive by decorating their house's floor and wall to seek God’s blessing in the form of fortune, prosperity and peace. Let's learn drawing the famous marriage scene of Ram-Sita in Madhubani with intricate motifs, symbolism and vibrant colours, from a National Award winner artist - Hema devi from Mithila.

We are pleased to announce an online workshop on Bharni style of Madhubani folk art, a course of 2 classes. in which on a guided session by eminant Madhubani artist - Hema devi, you will be painting the marriage scene of Ram-Sita.

During this session, you will learn -
• Madhubani - geometric figures unified with elements of nature.
• Intricate design of Madhubani motifs and Borders.
• Bharni style of Madhubani coloring techniques.
• Complete a colorful Bharni Madhubani painting of Ram-Sita Marriage.

Materials Required

- A3 size ( 11.7 x 16.5 inch) White Thick art Paper (200 GSM or more).

- Full Set of Acrylic Colors - artist quality.

- Round Brush - 000, 04, 06.

- Black Finetip Pen(preferably fine liners) 01, 03, 08.

- Red Gel Pen or Finetip pen.

- Pencil, scale, erasers.

- Few extra A4 size paper for rough work/practice.


About The Artist:

Hema Devi from Mithila-Madhubani district, Bihar is a renowned artist in Madhubani Painting. She has been painting madhubani since her age 10 and known for her exquisite intricate work on translating fascinating narratives from the Ramayana and the Mahabarata on paper and textile. She is a State award winner of 2008 and National award winner of 2018 for her outstanding contribution and popularizing Madhubani art. Her family has been practicing Madhubani for generations and her aunt Ms Ganga Devi is a Padmashree award winner and both her mother Leela devi and mother in law Subhadra Devi are national award winners. Hema devi has represented Madhubani art of Mithila at different International folk art festivals, e.g. Amsterdam in 2019.
