Overview
In Sanskrit 'Pattachitra', one of the oldest indigenous art from Odisha and West Bengal, means 'cloth painting' and dates back to 5th century. The earliest evidence of Pattachitra is found in religious town of Puri where this traditional art form was a medium of worshipping Lord Jagannath, narrating the stories of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.Spellbinding Pattachitra art is distinguished for intricately detailed and colorful border and bright background decoration using vegetable dyes and colours extracted from minerals. While storis from Hindu mythology, Epics and folklores dominated the central theme, magnificent sculptures of the Konark Sun Temple, Lingaraj Temple of Bhubaneswar too inspires Pattachitra compositions.
