What's Sivananda Tradition of Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga relates to the restraint of breath (Pranayama), Asanas, Bandhas and Mudras. 'Ha' ( solar energy) and 'tha' ( lunar energy) mean the union of the sun and the moon, union of Prana and Apana Vayus. In Sivananda tradition, asana is always balanced with pranayama and relaxation, offering indirect control of the mind.

Sivananda Yoga identifies a group of twelve asanas as basic and emphasis is on mastering these twelve basic asanas first. Pranayama or meditation is an essential part of Sivananda Hatha Yoga. Meditation coupled with positive thinking and sattvic diet give energy, reduces stress, cultivates integrity, and connects to the flow of universal life.
